Can a rain sensor be installed on my system? What are the benefits?

Yes, the Hunter Clik sensors are compatible with most brands of irrigation controllers and can be installed by your irrigation professional. Rain sensors are required by law in some areas, so it is a good idea to check with your contractor or local water authority before having an irrigation system installed.

Even if a sensor is not required, it is a good idea to have one on your system. They help to save water by interrupting any automatic cycles scheduled after enough accumulation of rain has occurred.

How much rain does my sensor need to shut off the sprinklers?

The Rain Clik and Wireless Rain Clik provide instant shut off, thanks to Hunter's Quick Response feature. They will activate when as little as a 1/8" of rain hits the sensor.

The Mini-Click is an adjustable model, which can be set to activate when 3 mm, 6mm, 13mm, 19 mm or 25 mm of rain hits the sensor.

How long does it take for the rain sensor to dry out?

All Hunter rain sensors have an adjustable "Vent Ring." Dry out time could be as little as 4 hours, depending upon weather conditions (temperature and humidity) and how the vent ring is set. If the weather remains cold and damp, your sensor could be active for months.

Why is my rain sensor not turning off the sprinklers?

The three most common reasons for why your rain sensor is not turning the system off are:

  1. The most common reason is because the sensor has NOT received enough rain to activate. Go out to the rain sensor and manually activate the switch. Do you hear it click? Did the sprinklers stop? If so, the rainfall on the sensor hasn’t reached the activation setting. (If you know that your rainfall has exceeded your rain sensor activation setting, you may want to consider moving the sensor to a different location.)
  2. The rain sensor switch is in the “BYPASS” or “OFF” position. To fix this, slide the switch into the “ACTIVE” position.
  3. During installation of the rain sensor, the terminal jumper was NOT removed. To fix this, remove the terminal jumper located on the sensor terminal screws

Sensor Testing

When testing the sensor always use a Manual ALL Stations or Manual Program Start. Under a Manual Single Station start the rain sensor will be ignored and the sensor will not shut down the water.

Once the Manual ALL Stations is initiated, go to the sensor and hold down the Quick Response Spindle button and the water will shut down.

How do I sync/readdress my Rain Clik?

There are some cases where you may need to readdress/sync the sensor on the roof to the receiver mounted near the controller so they share the same address. They are a matched set out of the box but sometimes after a power outage the receiver will lose it's address. Here is the readdressing procedure:

  1. Unplug the power from the controller and let the lights go out.
  2. Press and hold down the Sensor Bypass button on the receiver.
  3. Plug in the controller.
  4. Release the sensor bypass button.
  5. The Sensor Status light should turn orange meaning it is in the learn mode.
  6. Press the spindle button quick release on the sensor and the sensor status light on the receiver will turn red then green. The two are now addressed together.

Solar Sync Frequently Asked Questions

Solar Sync Basics
  • The Solar Sync takes hourly readings and every night at midnight changes the controller Season Adjust to a new value based on recent weather. The current value shown is actually a 3-day rolling average. The controller Start Times and Water Days do not change. Changes only occur to the Seasonal Adjust which in turn changes the station run time.
  • Make sure the controller's Seasonal Adjustment value is set to 100% when programming initial run times.
  • On initial set up, program in the peak station run time duration that you use in the hottest months of the year regardless of what time of year it is.
  • Make all wiring connections before powering up the host controller.
  • Allow the Solar Sync to take baseline measurements for 3 days. Then check the Solar Sync Seasonal Adjustment value on the controller.
  • Maximum distance from sensor to controller: 200 ft./60 m of wire.
  • Wiring: 18 AWG/1 mm or 20 AWG/0.8 mm diameter minimum from the sensor to the module. Approved for direct burial and sunlight exposure (UV).
  • Solar Sync has a two-year Manufacturers warranty from the date code on the back of the module.
  • The Wireless Solar Sync Sensor can be addressed to talk to any number of Wireless receiver/controllers within range.
Why is my Seasonal Adjustment so low?

Increase the value on the Water Adjustment scale (1-10 scale, default setting is 5). If you max out the scale at 10 and the system still requires increased Seasonal Adjustment, lower the Region (from 4 to 3, for example).

Why is my Seasonal Adjustment so high?

Decrease the value on the Water Adjustment scale (1-10 scale, default setting is 5). If you minimize the scale at 1 and still require decreased Seasonal Adjustment, move up to the next higher Region (from 2 to 3, for example).

The Solar Sync will instantly update the controller's Seasonal Adjustment value when the Region or Water Adjustment value is changed, allowing the installer to "dial in" the correct settings. See "Calibration/Setup" section of Solar Sync owner's manual for more details.

I have one station that is too wet or too dry, what should I adjust?

At any time you can simply increase or decrease run time to any individual station in the host controller and that station will adjust up and down with all the rest of the stations from a new level.

All my stations are too wet or too dry, what should I adjust?

Use the water + and - feature on the Solar Sync module to adjust the percentages applied to the controller. The Solar Sync comes from the factory set at 5 and can be adjusted from 1-10 with 10 giving you a higher percentage and 1 giving a lower percentage adjustment.

My controller/Solar Sync shows ERR in the display, what does this mean?

Controller shows ERR: Module wires not properly connected to controller terminal.

Solar Sync module shows ERR: Connection between module and sensor faulty.

Solar Sync module shows SERR: Indicates Sensor Error, communication has been lost between the Wireless Sensor and Wireless Receiver.

Visit the Hunter Support Library for instructions on how to eliminate the ERR message or click the link below.

How do I address the wireless Solar Sync to the receiver?

The Wireless Solar Sync Receiver and Sensor are already paired with the same address for an easy installation. When installed, the wireless Receiver will automatically go into a "search" mode looking for the signal from its paired sensor. However, it is a good idea to initialize communication manually between the wireless Receiver and Sensor during installation to verify correct signal transmission.

How to initialize communication manually between wireless Receiver and Sensor

Steps to communicate manually

  1. After the receiver's green and black wires have been connected, restore power to the controller.
  2. The red LED in the center of the wireless Receiver will turn on and stay solid for 10 seconds, indicating that it is in search mode, searching for a signal from a wireless sensor.
  3. While the red LED is solid and the wireless Receiver is in search mode, press and hold the spindle on the wireless sensor. The LED on the wireless receiver will blink 4 times and then turn off, indicating that the signal from the wireless sensor has been acknowledged

NOTE: In the event of a power outage (or any other reason when the receiver loses radio contact with the wireless sensor) the receiver will automatically go into search mode to re-establish communication with the sensor once power is restored. However, when power is restored the controller will automatically go into rain shut off mode until communication with the sensor is re-established, which may be up to 60 minutes (maximum). Performing the steps listed above to validate receiver/sensor communication will remove the controller from rain shut off mode and will return to its programmed irrigation schedule.
