What is a smart irrigation controller?

Simply stated, a smart irrigation controller or timer has built-in water saving features including a sensor to adjust to the optimal sprinkler run time based on the local weather conditions. Smart controllers help to provide a healthy, beautiful landscape while reducing water use. This not only saves water, but also reduces costs for the homeowner.

Hunter AC-powered controllers become water-saving smart controllers when paired with a Solar Sync® Sensor. The Solar Sync Sensor is EPA WaterSense® approved. You can easily convert previously installed AC-powered controllers to smart controllers by adding a Solar Sync Sensor.

The Technology Behind Smart Controllers with Solar Sync

The Solar Sync ET sensor is an advanced weather sensor that calculates evapotranspiration (ET) and adjusts Hunter controllers daily based on local weather conditions. Solar Sync measures solar radiation and temperature, and uses ET to determine the correct seasonal adjustment percentage value to send to the controller.

The controller then uses its programmed run time and Solar Sync's seasonal adjustment value to modify the irrigation run time for that day. In addition, the Solar Sync ET sensor includes the features of Hunter's popular Rain-Clik™ and Freeze-Clik® sensors providing quick response in shutting down your irrigation system during raining and/or freezing conditions  to save water.

Smart Irrigation starts with proper sprinkler system Design and Installation

A smart controller is part of a properly designed, installed, operated, and maintained automatic irrigation system. The timer is responsible for activating each valve and for the amount of water applied to the landscape.

It is important that an irrigation professional installs a smart controller to ensure it is set up properly for the water requirements of the landscape.
