To ensure Hunter remains committed to its value of Citizenship, employees formed the Hunter Sustainability Action Group. Made of volunteers from across the company, the group has a broad view to analyze and implement beneficial projects. Members examine our business from top to bottom identifying opportunities for process improvement and awareness campaigns to better our social and environmental performance. Current efforts focus on waste and energy reduction through encouraging behavior change at our headquarters.
HSAG has championed a new target for Hunter to become a Zero Waste to landfill certified campus by 2017. This requires diverting 90% of all materials that do not end up in our product from the landfill. In 2012 we diverted 67% of our waste from the landfill. A recent trash audit found the majority of our waste is paper or food based, so we implemented a coffee grounds recycling program and have a goal to reduce Hunter’s internal paper 50% by 2015. Both projects require transforming user habits through education.Back to Top
Climate Change poses risks to our environment and communities. HSAG aims to help reduce the energy used by Hunter’s technology and infrastructure. This will decrease cost and indirectly reduce pollutants. With the help of IS we implemented a mandatory power saving setting for most Hunter desktop computers. HSAG is working with facilities on an energy audit performed by San Diego Gas and Electric to determine areas of potential energy savings. During 2012 SDG&E completed a lighting and compressed air audit finding varying degrees of potential improvements. In late 2012 we pursued the recommended lighting retrofit project and replaced outdated lights with efficient fluorescent bulbs. This retrofit will reduce our energy usage by 274 MWh/yr, our Emissions by 207 metric tons of CO2e and save Hunter $39,000/year. Currently in consideration are the upgrades to our compressed air systems.Back to Top
