Abama Golf Course Taps the Power of the Pilot® Control Network for Cutting-Edge Irrigation Management

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the stunning Tenerife Island coast, Spain’s Abama Golf Course is revered for its unparalleled beauty and exceptional golfing experiences. Created by world-renowned golf designer Dave Thomas, the 18-hole championship course includes an expanse of 22 lakes, various waterfalls, and white sand bunkers for the ultimate test of skill.

The Challenge

The Abama Golf Course previously relied on an irrigation control system that was over 20 years old. The staff sought to upgrade their course with a more modern, cutting-edge solution offering the latest technology for optimal irrigation management. Given their remote location, they decided to complete the system installation with in-house labor using a phased transition to minimise downtime at the in-demand golf course.

The Solution

To streamline the transition, the staff opted for Hunter’s Pilot Control Network. They also consolidated their system by replacing 31 of their existing VSX™ Field Controllers with 23 Pilot Field Controllers, which manage up to 80 stations each. Since the new controllers were compatible with the course’s existing Surveyor Control Software, they eliminated downtime and disruptions during the phased transition. Once the final controller was installed, Pilot Command Center Software (CCS) began delivering centralised management for seamless coordination of all irrigation functions across the expansive course.

The Result

With the Pilot Control Network, the Abama Golf Course has experienced a notable transformation of its irrigation management. Pilot CCS facilitates more precise control and monitoring of watering schedules, optimising water distribution and minimising waste. By reducing the number of controllers on the site and integrating advanced technology into their system, the staff has significantly improved the course’s playing conditions while achieving greater operational and cost efficiencies. As a bonus, the club has showcased its dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

By tapping into the power of Pilot, the Abama Golf Course staff has experienced a seamless transition to more efficient irrigation management, improved playability, and optimal water savings, all while delivering a better golfing experience to its many visitors.
