X2 - Err Messages

Here is a list of the error messages and ways to troubleshoot them:

Station # ERR Message

CAUSE -  The Station # ERR (for example 1 ERR) is a diagnostic message that appears when your controller is detecting a fault on that corresponding irrigation zone.

SOLUTION - To determine the cause of this message it is necessary to follow a series of steps. Disconnect the faulting wire from the controllers' screw terminal and switch it with a wire that is working. For example, if zone #2 faults, disconnect the #2 wire from the controller and put it in the #1 screw terminal and put the #1 wire into the #2 screw terminal. Now try to run zone 1. If zone 1 now faults out, it is confirmed that there is a short in the wire from the controller to your zone valve, a short in the connections to the wire or at the valve solenoid itself.

You can further confirm the problem is in the original #2 wire by now trying to run zone #2. If the wire connected to screw terminal #2 now turns on our original zone #1, it is further confirmation the problem is with the original #2 wire or connections.

SP ERR or ERR Message

CAUSE -  Noise entering the controller through the “SmartPort” wiring or it is wired incorrectly.

SOLUTION - A few steps are necessary to determine cause of “Err” message.

1. Check SmartPort® Wiring

If the “Err” message is displayed without a device attached, check that SmartPort® wiring is correct. Make sure that the SmartPort wiring is not bundled with the field wiring. The white SmartPort® wire must be attached on the terminal next to the blue wire on the REM terminal, then red above ground. See illustration to the right.

2. Replace the SmartPort®

          The SmartPort® connector may be damaged. Replace the SmartPort®.

3. Check Device (Remote Receiver)

If “Err” message occurs when device is plugged into the SmartPort® the device may have the wrong station count set or the device may be defective and should be replaced. Check the maximum station count setting on your hand-held remote.

P ERR Message

CAUSE - The “P ERR” message is displayed when the P/MV circuit is drawing too much current. Common causes include; a defective solenoid on the master valve, incompatible or defective pump relay, or wire run too long between the relay and controller.

SOLUTION - A few steps are necessary to determine cause of P-ERR message.

  • Check Master Valve Solenoid/Wiring

If a master valve is being used, the problem may be a defective solenoid or faulty wiring. Conduct a resistance check on the circuit to verify the fault.

  • Check Pump Relay

If a pump relay is being used, problems may be caused by: 1) incorrect wire size and run from the controller to the relay, 2) a defective relay, 3) poor wire connections for the circuit. If necessary, replace the defective pump relay or correct wiring issues.

To determine the cause of this message it is necessary to follow a series of steps:

  1. If you have a voltmeter and know how to use it, test the voltage at the Pump Start Relay or Master Valve. The voltage should be between 24 and 28 VAC.
  2. If you do not have voltage at the Pump Start Relay or Master Valve, the wire may be cut, damaged or disconnected.
  3. For the master valve only, if you do have voltage at the valve, then check the Ohms resistance of the solenoid with your voltmeter. The Ohms resistance should be between 20-30 Ohms.
  4. If the solenoid resistance is okay, then you will need to check the wire connections.
